'BIGOT—TOP SECRET—Gunfire-support overlay, with Annex Able Intelligence Plan—Appendix 1 to Annex Dog; Annex Able sheets 1–19'
This is an original BIGOT–Top Secret naval bombardment overlay for Utah Beach, issued to Assault Force U before D-Day, 6 June 1944, with nineteen sheets of the force's Intelligence Plan. Laid over a 1:50,000 map, it fixes the firing stations of the Pearl Harbor veteran Nevada, the cruisers Tuscaloosa, Quincy and Black Prince and their destroyers, to be taken before H-40, forty minutes before the first troops landed; among them is USS Corry, sunk that morning. BIGOT was the invasion's highest level of secrecy, reserved for those who needed to know where and when it would strike. The Intelligence Plan, Serial 00010, also BIGOT and dated 15 May 1944, briefs the force on the Utah beaches, obstacles and German defences; sheet 20 is absent. Both were retained by Lieutenant Carl M. Good Jr, whose subchaser SC-1301 spent D-Day shepherding landing craft between the troopships and Utah Beach, and stayed in his family for over eighty years. Provenance is supported by a certified letter and set out in the linked dossier, with copies of the Navy records naming Good in command, his handwritten account and a crewman's eyewitness recollection. The overlay has been repaired, with some losses; the base map is not present.
