Charles Darwin’s comparative plate sets ten island and atoll plans side by side: Vanikoro; Hogoleu (Chuuk); Raiatea; Bow or Heyou (Hao); Bolabola (Bora Bora); Maurua (Maupiti); Pouynipète (Pohnpei); the Gambier Islands; Peros Banhos; and Keeling or Cocos. Engraved by J. & C. Walker and outlined in original blue, it synthesises surveys by d’Urville, Duperrey, Beechey, Lütke, Moresby, Powell and FitzRoy. Their repeated ring forms make Darwin’s argument visible. He supplied the first comprehensive, testable explanation of how the principal reef types are related: as a volcanic island slowly subsides, coral continues growing upward in shallow water, transforming a fringing reef into a barrier reef and ultimately, after the central island disappears, an atoll. First published in 1842 in Darwin’s The Structure and Distribution of Coral Reefs—one of the foundational works of modern reef geology—this is a later 1895 printing retaining its delicate colour.

Packing
Items smaller than A4 size are usually packed in a stiffened, board-backed envelope. Larger items are rolled and packed in postal tubes. Large items which are too stiff to be rolled in wide-diameter tubes are mailed in all-board envelopes. In the unlikely event of damage in transit, please send the affected item or items back to us and we will provide a replacement or refund.

Returns
We accept returns for any reason if sent back to us within 14 days of receipt of your order. If any of your items are not as described, we will provide a full refund including reasonable return postage costs upon safe return to us.
