'Día del Guerrillero Heroico 8 de Octubre · Journée du Guerrillero Héroïque 8 Octobre · Day of the Heroic Guerrilla October 8'
A large folio print issued in 1970 after a striking Cuban propaganda poster originally produced in 1968 by OSPAAAL (Organización de Solidaridad de los Pueblos de Asia, África y América Latina) to commemorate the Day of the Heroic Guerrilla. The design centres on Alberto Korda’s iconic Guerrillero Heroico photograph of Che Guevara—key figure of the Cuban Revolution—superimposed upon a map of South America, transforming geography into a symbol of continental struggle. Produced at the height of Cuba’s internationalist phase, the poster was intended for global circulation, carrying its revolutionary message in Spanish, French, English, and Arabic. It exemplifies OSPAAAL’s distinctive fusion of graphic modernism and political propaganda. Founded in 1966, OSPAAAL was a Cuban-led organisation dedicated to promoting anti-imperialist and revolutionary movements worldwide, and became renowned for the visual power of its posters. Guevara had been captured and executed in Bolivia in 1967 by the Bolivian Army, with CIA assistance, while attempting to incite a revolutionary insurgency there. The Maryland Institute College of Art has described Korda’s image as “the world’s most famous photograph.”
