'Revised route map of the Eastern Bengal State Railway system & connected steamer services'
This 1913 railway and river-steamer map captures Bengal before Partition, linking Calcutta with the delta, Dacca and the Himalayan foothills across what is now India and Bangladesh. Printed in black, red, green and blue, it distinguishes broad-gauge and metre-gauge railways and lines under construction. Blue steamer routes trace the river services connecting with the railway network, revealing a transport system in which waterways formed an integral part of longer journeys. Darjeeling appears at the northern edge, while the waterways of the Sundarbans spread across the south. The combination of railway stations and river connections offers an evocative picture of travel through colonial Bengal. It is accompanied by the original illustrated handbook, From the Hooghly to the Himalayas, in blue cloth gilt.
