A Perspective View of Fort St. George on the Cor[o]mandel Coast belonging to the East India Company
A reduced Hinton issue of Jan van Ryne’s celebrated 1754 view of Fort St George, Madras, the East India Company’s first major fortified settlement in India. The larger Sayer plate formed part of Van Ryne’s series of six “Views of Early Settlements”, alongside Bombay, Fort William, Batavia, St Helena and the Cape of Good Hope; this smaller London version was probably issued c.1755 for John Hinton’s magazine market. Seen from offshore, the fort appears as a maritime citadel: walls, church, flags, surf and shipping asserting Company power on the Coromandel Coast. Founded in the seventeenth century, Fort St George became the nucleus of Madras, now Chennai, and still survives as the seat of the Tamil Nadu Secretariat and legislature.
