'From Tungchow to Peking'
A plan of the thirteen-mile approach from Tungchow to Peking, showing river, canal, paved roads, bridges, ferry and the eastern gates of the Chinese and Tartar cities. Dennys’s 1867 engraving reduces Sheet 4 of the British Pei-Ho survey, made in 1860 by Lieutenant-Colonel Garnet Wolseley with Lieutenant R. Harrison, R.E., and published in 1863. It preserves cartography from the Anglo-French advance, including the granite-paved imperial road and Chang-kia-wan, where Qing forces resisted in September 1860. The route subsequently served foreign legations admitted to Peking by the treaties. Later black manuscript lines and notes apparently identify Japanese, Russian, British and American approaches, camps and “14 August”, consistent with the multinational relief of Peking’s besieged Legation Quarter on 14 August 1900 during the Boxer Rebellion. The annotator and annotation date remain unknown; contemporary campaign use is unconfirmed. Our research located one other loose example in a mixed five-map auction lot in 2022, but no separately catalogued sale or comparable example with these apparently Boxer-related annotations.

Packing
Items smaller than A4 size are usually packed in a stiffened, board-backed envelope. Larger items are rolled and packed in postal tubes. Large items which are too stiff to be rolled in wide-diameter tubes are mailed in all-board envelopes. In the unlikely event of damage in transit, please send the affected item or items back to us and we will provide a replacement or refund.

Returns
We accept returns for any reason if sent back to us within 14 days of receipt of your order.
