Charles Goad Insurance Plan of London, sheet 14 [Mansion House, King William Street, Cannon Street and Walbrook]
Goad's fire insurance plan of London, sheet 14, covers Mansion House and King William Street (EC4). Here George Dance's Mansion House and Egyptian Hall of 1739–52 remain the Lord Mayor's residence. Wren's domed St Stephen Walbrook is where Chad Varah founded the Samaritans in 1953, and St Mary Abchurch kept its Grinling Gibbons reredos through the Blitz. The Rothschild bank has held New Court on St Swithin's Lane since 1809, rebuilding it in 1962 and again in 2011. The Bank Station booking halls and pedestrian subways shown on the sheet were remade by the upgrade completed in 2023. The sheet also names Barclays Bank, Chetwynd House and the churchyards. The plan was made to assess property and fire risk, and it was kept current with pasted overlays recording changes of use, altered layouts, demolition and new building. Its latest dated correction, from December 1967, is a vacancy note on the west side of St Swithin's Lane, just north of Salters Hall Court. The sheet was reissued in November 1935, with a 1949 copyright date, and the key plans acquired with the group were corrected as late as October 1970 and March 1971. Other streets on the sheet include Mansion House Street, Lombard Street, Walbrook, Sherborne Lane, Abchurch Lane, Cannon Street and Nicholas Lane.
