Charles Goad Insurance Plan of London, sheet 202 [Holborn: High Holborn, Kingsway, Southampton Row and the Central School of Arts and Crafts]

Goad's fire insurance plan of London, sheet 202, covers Holborn where Kingsway meets High Holborn and Southampton Row (WC1 and WC2). The Central School of Arts and Crafts appears here under a name that was dropped in 1966, in the Southampton Row building that its successor, Central Saint Martins, left for King's Cross in 2011. Holy Trinity Church of 1909–11 had closed by 1991 and became the Aviation House offices behind its retained front, whereas the Church of St Anselm and St Cecilia remains a working parish. The Midland Bank is labelled with a name that HSBC retired in 1999, and the sheet also names the London Electricity Board substation and Holborn Underground Station. Goad's sheets were working plans for assessing property and fire risk, and they were kept current with pasted overlays recording changes of use, altered layouts, demolition and new building. On this sheet the latest dated corrections are vacancy annotations of September 1970. The sheet was resurveyed and reissued in August 1944, with a 1950 copyright date, and it belongs to a group whose key plans were still being corrected in October 1970 and March 1971. Other streets on the sheet include Bloomsbury Square, Sicilian Avenue, Vernon Place, Fisher Street, Catton Street, Newton Street, Parker Street, Great Queen Street, Gate Street, New Turnstile and Remnant Street.

Insurance Plan of London, Volume VIII. Charles E. Goad, London.

Condition: Good |

Good; suitable for framing. A working sheet from one of the bound Goad volumes historically kept by fire-insurance offices, updated over decades with pasted correction slips. The build-up of correction slips has left the sheet stiff and gently undulating rather than flat, a characteristic of these working plans. There is age toning and light surface soiling, consistent with its long use as a working map. Please check the scan for any blemishes prior to making your purchase. Please contact us if you would like to arrange to view this map. Sheet 201 is printed on the reverse side. Each map is listed as a separate product, but the two maps share a single sheet, so whichever you buy, you receive both. If both maps are ordered together, we will send the sheet and refund the second purchase in full.

Condition Guide

We assess the condition of each item using three categories: Good, Fair, and Poor. We strive to ensure that any significant flaws are clearly shown in the images provided and detailed in the accompanying condition statement.

Good

The item presents well, with no significant flaws, and is in frameable condition. Minor imperfections—such as light spotting or offsetting, small blemishes, tight margins, neatly repaired tears, or discreet/professionally executed restoration—do not materially detract from its overall appearance.

Fair

The item shows noticeable flaws but remains in frameable condition. Some buyers may feel these imperfections affect its visual appeal. Typical issues may include more prominent spotting, blemishes, bleed-through from the reverse, obvious offsetting, visible or extensive restoration, wear along fold lines or junctures, small wormholes, trimmed or closely cropped edges, or less carefully executed repairs.

Poor

The item has major flaws that significantly impact its presentation and/or suitability for framing. These may include heavy spotting, staining, bleed-through, offsetting, unrepaired damage, or poorly executed repairs such as tears, holes, or areas of paper loss (including within the printed image). The item may also be fragile and prone to further deterioration.
