Charles Goad Insurance Plan of London, sheet 229 [Oxford Circus, Oxford Street, Regent Street and British Home Stores]
Goad's fire insurance plan of London, sheet 229, covers Oxford Circus and Hanover Square (W1), and shows the London College of Fashion still on John Prince's Street beside the Circus. There it was close to the garment trade it served, before its move in September 2023 to the new cultural and educational district at East Bank, Stratford. British Home Stores' chain collapsed in 2016, while Regent Hall, the skating rink that William Booth bought in 1882, is still a Salvation Army centre. National Provincial Bank's name had merged into National Westminster Bank on 1 January 1970, before the final corrections were made. In October 2022 Hanover Square gained the Elizabeth line's Bond Street ticket hall. Goad's plans were compiled for property and fire-risk assessment and updated with pasted overlays recording changes of use, altered layouts, demolition and new building. The latest dated correction on this sheet is October 1970. The sheet was resurveyed and reissued in September 1952, with a 1952 copyright date, and a key plan covering this area, acquired with the same group of maps, records corrections to October 1970. Other streets on the sheet include Oxford Street, Regent Street, Hanover Street, Cavendish Square, Holles Street, Great Castle Street, Margaret Street, Princes Street, Harewood Place, Argyll Street and Little Argyll Street.
