Charles Goad Insurance Plan of London, sheet 25 [Chiswell Street, Finsbury Pavement, Finsbury Square and the Artillery Ground]

Goad's fire insurance plan of London, sheet 25, covers Chiswell Street, Finsbury Pavement and Finsbury Square (EC1 and EC2), with the Artillery Ground at its heart. The Honourable Artillery Company, the Army's oldest regiment, was chartered in 1537, and it has drilled there since the seventeenth century and still holds the ground. On the sheet, BP House, Burmah House, City Wall House, Finsbury Court, Lloyds Bank and the computer centre at Rambler House show a service economy taking hold. Yet workshops and stores still survived among the office blocks at the time. Gavrelle House at 2 Bunhill Row, then government offices, is now the University of Law's Moorgate campus. A slip behind B.P. House in block 245 is annotated 'Admission Refused Nov: 1961'. The plan was compiled to rate fire risk and stayed in service through pasted overlays logging new uses, altered layouts, demolition and rebuilding. Its latest dated correction is a basement and first-floor vacancy note of November 1970 at Evelyn House, 101 Finsbury Pavement. The sheet was reissued in November 1934, with a 1949 copyright date, and it belongs to a group whose key plans were still being corrected in October 1970 and March 1971. Other streets on the sheet include Finsbury Street, Ropemaker Street, Milton Street and Moor Lane.

Insurance Plan of London, Volume I. Charles E. Goad, London.

Condition: Good |

Good; suitable for framing. A working sheet from one of the bound Goad volumes historically kept by fire-insurance offices, updated over decades with pasted correction slips. The build-up of correction slips has left the sheet stiff and gently undulating rather than flat, a characteristic of these working plans. There is age toning and light surface soiling, consistent with its long use as a working map. Please check the scan for any blemishes prior to making your purchase. The reverse side is plain, with nothing printed on it.

Condition Guide

We assess the condition of each item using three categories: Good, Fair, and Poor. We strive to ensure that any significant flaws are clearly shown in the images provided and detailed in the accompanying condition statement.

Good

The item presents well, with no significant flaws, and is in frameable condition. Minor imperfections—such as light spotting or offsetting, small blemishes, tight margins, neatly repaired tears, or discreet/professionally executed restoration—do not materially detract from its overall appearance.

Fair

The item shows noticeable flaws but remains in frameable condition. Some buyers may feel these imperfections affect its visual appeal. Typical issues may include more prominent spotting, blemishes, bleed-through from the reverse, obvious offsetting, visible or extensive restoration, wear along fold lines or junctures, small wormholes, trimmed or closely cropped edges, or less carefully executed repairs.

Poor

The item has major flaws that significantly impact its presentation and/or suitability for framing. These may include heavy spotting, staining, bleed-through, offsetting, unrepaired damage, or poorly executed repairs such as tears, holes, or areas of paper loss (including within the printed image). The item may also be fragile and prone to further deterioration.
