Charles Goad Insurance Plan of London, sheet 27 [Lincoln's Inn, Lincoln's Inn Fields, New Square and Carey Street]
Goad's fire insurance plan of London, sheet 27, covers Lincoln's Inn and Lincoln's Inn Fields (WC2), a legal quarter that has changed little since the sheet's day. Lincoln's Inn Hall and Lincoln's Inn Library, both opened by Queen Victoria in 1845, are still in daily use, and the Ashworth Centre was added beneath the Hall's terrace in 2018. New Square, Old Square, Stone Buildings and Old Buildings remain chambers beside the Lincoln's Inn war memorial. Facing the Fields, the Land Registry Office shown on the sheet is now LSE's Sir Arthur Lewis Building, which was converted for teaching in 2013 as the university expanded into former government offices. The sheet also names the Council of Legal Education chambers, and the New Court overlay labels the new building "To be offices", recording an office development within the Inn. The plan was prepared to assess fire risk, and it carries pasted revisions recording new uses, altered layouts, demolition and rebuilding, although none of the revisions on this sheet carries a date. The sheet was resurveyed and reissued in January 1946, with a 1950 copyright date, and the key plans acquired with it carry corrections as late as October 1970 and March 1971. Other streets on the sheet include Serle Street, Portugal Street and Carey Street.
