Charles Goad Insurance Plan of London, sheet 28 [Victoria Embankment, Tudor Street, Carmelite Street and the Guildhall School of Music]

Goad's fire insurance plan of London, sheet 28, covers Victoria Embankment, Tudor Street and Temple Avenue (EC4), and it shows the Daily Mail's works in full production. At the time, Associated Newspapers' machine rooms, linotype departments and paper stores at Carmelite House and New Carmelite House made newspaper production a heavy industry on the River Thames. The presses ran until the late 1980s, when the paper moved to Kensington. Publishing keeps a foothold here today, though without the machinery, through Hachette's headquarters at Carmelite House. The sheet also names the United Newspapers premises, Temple House and Audit House. The Guildhall School of Music is shown in its building of 1886 on John Carpenter Street, which it left for the Barbican in 1977. Sion College closed its library and left the Embankment in 1996, and its building is now offices. The plan was made to rate property and fire risk and was kept current with pasted slips marking changed uses, altered layouts, demolition and rebuilding, though none of the slips is dated. The sheet was resurveyed and reissued in January 1946, with a 1950 copyright date, and the key plans acquired with the group were corrected as late as October 1970 and March 1971. Other streets on the sheet include Tallis Street, Carmelite Street and King's Bench Walk.

Insurance Plan of London, Volume II. Charles E. Goad, London.

Condition: Good |

Good; suitable for framing. A working sheet from one of the bound Goad volumes historically kept by fire-insurance offices, updated over decades with pasted correction slips. The build-up of correction slips has left the sheet stiff and gently undulating rather than flat, a characteristic of these working plans. There is age toning and light surface soiling, consistent with its long use as a working map. Please check the scan for any blemishes prior to making your purchase. Please contact us if you would like to arrange to view this map. Sheet 27 is printed on the reverse side. Each map is listed as a separate product, but the two maps share a single sheet, so whichever you buy, you receive both. If both maps are ordered together, we will send the sheet and refund the second purchase in full.

Condition Guide

We assess the condition of each item using three categories: Good, Fair, and Poor. We strive to ensure that any significant flaws are clearly shown in the images provided and detailed in the accompanying condition statement.

Good

The item presents well, with no significant flaws, and is in frameable condition. Minor imperfections—such as light spotting or offsetting, small blemishes, tight margins, neatly repaired tears, or discreet/professionally executed restoration—do not materially detract from its overall appearance.

Fair

The item shows noticeable flaws but remains in frameable condition. Some buyers may feel these imperfections affect its visual appeal. Typical issues may include more prominent spotting, blemishes, bleed-through from the reverse, obvious offsetting, visible or extensive restoration, wear along fold lines or junctures, small wormholes, trimmed or closely cropped edges, or less carefully executed repairs.

Poor

The item has major flaws that significantly impact its presentation and/or suitability for framing. These may include heavy spotting, staining, bleed-through, offsetting, unrepaired damage, or poorly executed repairs such as tears, holes, or areas of paper loss (including within the printed image). The item may also be fragile and prone to further deterioration.
