Charles Goad Insurance Plan of London, sheet 311 [Spitalfields: Bishopsgate, Brushfield Street, Artillery Lane and Spitalfields Market (outline only)]

Goad's fire insurance plan of London, sheet 311, covers Spitalfields from Bishopsgate to the market (E1 and EC2), where the lorry parking and refuse facilities shown along the Spitalfields Market perimeter reveal the infrastructure of wholesale food distribution. That trade left for Leyton in 1991, and the district became a shopping and dining destination, with Bishops Square following in 2005. Bishopsgate Institute, which opened in 1895, still runs its free library and archives. Sandys Row Synagogue, a Huguenot chapel of 1766 that has been in Jewish use since 1867, is London's oldest surviving Ashkenazi synagogue. By contrast, the Central Foundation School for Girls left Spital Square for Bow in 1975. The sheet also names St Botolph's Hall and the Provident Association of London Ltd building, which was under construction in August 1968. The sheet was kept up to date for fire-risk assessment with pasted slips recording new uses and rebuilding, and its latest annotations, of August 1968, include a vacancy note at 10 Artillery Lane. It was reissued in June 1932, with a 1950 copyright date, and it belongs to a group whose key plans were still being corrected in October 1970 and March 1971. Other streets on the sheet include Brushfield Street, Fort Street, Steward Street, Gun Street, Sandys Row, Widegate Street and Middlesex Street.

Insurance Plan of London, Volume XI. Charles E. Goad, London.

Condition: Good |

Good; suitable for framing. A working sheet from one of the bound Goad volumes historically kept by fire-insurance offices, updated over decades with pasted correction slips. The build-up of correction slips has left the sheet stiff and gently undulating rather than flat, a characteristic of these working plans. There is age toning and light surface soiling, consistent with its long use as a working map. Adhesive staining around the projecting tab. Size excludes the tab at the side. Please check the scan for any blemishes prior to making your purchase. Please contact us if you would like to arrange to view this map. Sheet 312 is printed on the reverse side. Each map is listed as a separate product, but the two maps share a single sheet, so whichever you buy, you receive both. If both maps are ordered together, we will send the sheet and refund the second purchase in full.

Condition Guide

We assess the condition of each item using three categories: Good, Fair, and Poor. We strive to ensure that any significant flaws are clearly shown in the images provided and detailed in the accompanying condition statement.

Good

The item presents well, with no significant flaws, and is in frameable condition. Minor imperfections—such as light spotting or offsetting, small blemishes, tight margins, neatly repaired tears, or discreet/professionally executed restoration—do not materially detract from its overall appearance.

Fair

The item shows noticeable flaws but remains in frameable condition. Some buyers may feel these imperfections affect its visual appeal. Typical issues may include more prominent spotting, blemishes, bleed-through from the reverse, obvious offsetting, visible or extensive restoration, wear along fold lines or junctures, small wormholes, trimmed or closely cropped edges, or less carefully executed repairs.

Poor

The item has major flaws that significantly impact its presentation and/or suitability for framing. These may include heavy spotting, staining, bleed-through, offsetting, unrepaired damage, or poorly executed repairs such as tears, holes, or areas of paper loss (including within the printed image). The item may also be fragile and prone to further deterioration.
