Charles Goad Insurance Plan of London, sheet 312 [Spitalfields: Commercial Street, Folgate Street, the Flower Market and the Godfrey Phillips tobacco factory]
Goad's fire insurance plan of London, sheet 312, covers Spitalfields along Commercial Street, Folgate Street and Hanbury Street (E1), where the Spitalfields Flower Market and Godfrey Phillips' tobacco factory then stood side by side. The flower trade followed the fruit and vegetables to Leyton in 1991. Godfrey Phillips, which was founded in 1844 and later made De Reszke cigarettes, passed to Philip Morris after a takeover bid in 1968, and the former factory's extension at 132 Commercial Street now contains apartments. The Peabody Buildings, dating from February 1864, were the Peabody Donation Fund's first estate. They were sold in the late 1970s and are now private flats called The Cloisters. The sheet also names Bishopsgate Telephone Exchange, Wheler House and Marlborough Works. The plan was compiled for fire-risk assessment and amended with pasted overlays recording new uses and rebuilding, and its latest dated corrections are vacancy annotations of August 1968. It was reissued in June 1932, with a 1950 copyright date, and the key plans acquired with it carry corrections as late as October 1970 and March 1971. Other streets on the sheet include Quaker Street, Wheler Street, Grey Eagle Street, Calvin Street, Little Pearl Street, Fleur de Lis Street, Jerome Street and Lamb Street.
