Charles Goad Insurance Plan of London, sheet 4 [Queen Victoria Street, Upper Thames Street, Cannon Street and the Financial Times printing works — obsolete copy]

Goad's fire insurance plan of London, sheet 4, covers Cannon Street and Queen Victoria Street (EC4) in the edition marked "obsolete", and it records post-war offices under construction in December 1958. The Financial Times printing works and offices on the sheet are Bracken House, which was listed in 1987. The presses stopped in 1988, and the FT returned to the building in 2019. St Nicholas Cole Abbey Church, restored in 1962, still stands, while the Salvation Army International Headquarters, rebuilt in 1963 and again in 2004, remains on its site. On the River Thames the sheet names Sunlight Wharf and Brooks and Brook's Wharf, and the warehouse at Brook's Wharf is now the Globe View apartments. The plan was made to assess fire risk, and it was kept current with pasted slips as buildings changed. Its replacement, reissued in November 1959, maps Old Change Court, Spillers and Old Change House in place of denser merchant and warehouse plots, together with a reconfigured Salvation Army headquarters and wider riverside clearance. This copy was reissued in November 1928, with a 1949 copyright date. Its latest dated correction is December 1958, and regular updating ended with the 1959 replacement. Other streets on the sheet include Carter Lane, Old Change, Distaff Lane, Friday Street, Bread Street, Knightrider Street, St Peter's Hill, Lambeth Hill, Upper Thames Street, High Timber Street, Gardner's Lane and Broken Wharf.

Date Published: 1928 (1958)

November 1928 (reissue); copyright 1949. The latest explicitly dated correction we have identified on the sheet is December 1958. The replacement sheet was reissued in 1959, suggesting regular updating of this predecessor ceased around then. Key plans for other volumes acquired with this sheet record corrections up to March 1971, suggesting common working use until about that date.

Type: Vintage hand-coloured fire-insurance plan with later overpasted amendments

Insurance Plan of London, Volume I. Charles E. Goad, London.

Condition: Good |

Good; suitable for framing. A working sheet from one of the bound Goad volumes historically kept by fire-insurance offices, updated over decades with pasted correction slips. The build-up of correction slips has left the sheet stiff and gently undulating rather than flat, a characteristic of these working plans. There is age toning and light surface soiling, consistent with its long use as a working map. Please check the scan for any blemishes prior to making your purchase. Sheet 3 is printed on the reverse side. Each map is listed as a separate product, but the two maps share a single sheet, so whichever you buy, you receive both. If both maps are ordered together, we will send the sheet and refund the second purchase in full.

Condition Guide

We assess the condition of each item using three categories: Good, Fair, and Poor. We strive to ensure that any significant flaws are clearly shown in the images provided and detailed in the accompanying condition statement.

Good

The item presents well, with no significant flaws, and is in frameable condition. Minor imperfections—such as light spotting or offsetting, small blemishes, tight margins, neatly repaired tears, or discreet/professionally executed restoration—do not materially detract from its overall appearance.

Fair

The item shows noticeable flaws but remains in frameable condition. Some buyers may feel these imperfections affect its visual appeal. Typical issues may include more prominent spotting, blemishes, bleed-through from the reverse, obvious offsetting, visible or extensive restoration, wear along fold lines or junctures, small wormholes, trimmed or closely cropped edges, or less carefully executed repairs.

Poor

The item has major flaws that significantly impact its presentation and/or suitability for framing. These may include heavy spotting, staining, bleed-through, offsetting, unrepaired damage, or poorly executed repairs such as tears, holes, or areas of paper loss (including within the printed image). The item may also be fragile and prone to further deterioration.
