Charles Goad Insurance Plan of London, sheet 402 [Camden: Royal College Street, St Pancras Way, Regent's Canal and the Royal Veterinary College]

Goad's fire insurance plan of London, sheet 402, covers Camden between Royal College Street, St Pancras Way and Regent's Canal (NW1). The plan is anchored by the Royal Veterinary College, which was founded in 1791 and still teaches here, with the Beaumont Sainsbury Animal Hospital alongside it today. Next door, the sheet shows St Pancras Hospital, which was run under University College Hospital from 1948 and gave up two acres in 2023 for Oriel, the Moorfields and UCL eye centre planned for 2027. Around the college and the hospital, the sheet records what was then a district of handling and distribution. It names the London Midland Region goods depot, the Post Office transport depot, the Central Metal Storage warehouses, the Atlantic Metal Company and London Electricity Board premises. Derelict coal-chute ground by Camley Street became Camley Street Natural Park in 1985, and the London Electricity Board itself was privatised in 1990. Such plans were used to price fire risk, and they were kept current by slips pasted over changed uses, altered layouts, demolition and new building. On this sheet, vacancy labels dated February 1970 are the latest dated correction identified. The printed base heading is dated March 1891, with a 1951 copyright date, and a key plan for South London from the same group records corrections to March 1971. Other streets on the sheet include Baynes Street, Georgiana Street, Pratt Street and Plender Street.

Insurance Plan of London, Volume XII. Charles E. Goad, London.

Condition: Good |

Good; suitable for framing. A working sheet from one of the bound Goad volumes historically kept by fire-insurance offices, updated over decades with pasted correction slips. The build-up of correction slips has left the sheet stiff and gently undulating rather than flat, a characteristic of these working plans. There is age toning and light surface soiling, consistent with its long use as a working map. Adhesive staining. Size excludes the tab at the side. Please check the scan for any blemishes prior to making your purchase. Please contact us if you would like to arrange to view this map. Sheet 403 is printed on the reverse side. Each map is listed as a separate product, but the two maps share a single sheet, so whichever you buy, you receive both. If both maps are ordered together, we will send the sheet and refund the second purchase in full.

Condition Guide

We assess the condition of each item using three categories: Good, Fair, and Poor. We strive to ensure that any significant flaws are clearly shown in the images provided and detailed in the accompanying condition statement.

Good

The item presents well, with no significant flaws, and is in frameable condition. Minor imperfections—such as light spotting or offsetting, small blemishes, tight margins, neatly repaired tears, or discreet/professionally executed restoration—do not materially detract from its overall appearance.

Fair

The item shows noticeable flaws but remains in frameable condition. Some buyers may feel these imperfections affect its visual appeal. Typical issues may include more prominent spotting, blemishes, bleed-through from the reverse, obvious offsetting, visible or extensive restoration, wear along fold lines or junctures, small wormholes, trimmed or closely cropped edges, or less carefully executed repairs.

Poor

The item has major flaws that significantly impact its presentation and/or suitability for framing. These may include heavy spotting, staining, bleed-through, offsetting, unrepaired damage, or poorly executed repairs such as tears, holes, or areas of paper loss (including within the printed image). The item may also be fragile and prone to further deterioration.
