Charles Goad Insurance Plan of London, sheet 407 [Camden: Oval Road, Jamestown Road, Regent's Canal and W. & A. Gilbey's premises — obsolete outline]

Goad's uncoloured outline fire insurance plan of London, sheet 407, covers Camden at Oval Road and Regent's Canal (NW1), and it preserves the Gilbey and piano-making quarter before clearance. The premises of W. and A. Gilbey, the drinks empire that also filled the Roundhouse as a bonded warehouse from 1871, spread across the sheet, with the Collard piano works beside them. The sheet also shows the London and North Western Railway, which was absorbed into the LMS in 1923. Today Southampton Bridge carries Oval Road over the canal to what was Gilbey's wharf, where the Pirate Castle has stood since 1977. This edition, which is marked obsolete, records streets, building footprints and plot divisions with less occupancy and risk detail than the coloured plans. Insurers used those coloured plans to price fire risk and kept them current with overlays recording changed uses, altered layouts, demolition and new construction. A coloured replacement edition, reissued in August 1954 and corrected in February 1970, records transport uses and new occupancies, and the circular former Collard factory survives today in changed use as offices. The printed base heading is dated March 1891, and the replacement edition's 1954 reissue places the end of this sheet's regular updating at about 1954. Other streets on the sheet include Jamestown Road, Gloucester Crescent, Arlington Road and Inverness Street.

Size 63 x 53 cm | 24.5 x 21.0 inches

Date Published: 1891 (c1954)

March 1891 (base plan); copyright date not visible. We have identified no explicitly dated later corrections on this sheet; pasted revisions are present. The replacement sheet was reissued in 1954, suggesting regular updating of this predecessor ceased around then. The sheet is headed Volume XII, outside the South London coverage of the Volume X key plan. Key plans for other volumes acquired with this sheet record corrections up to March 1971, suggesting common working use until about that date.

Type: Vintage uncoloured fire-insurance outline plan with later overpasted outline amendments

Publication: Charles Goad Fire Insurance Maps

Insurance Plan of London, Volume XII. Charles E. Goad, London.

Condition: Good |

Good; suitable for framing. A working sheet from one of the bound Goad volumes historically kept by fire-insurance offices, updated over decades with pasted correction slips. The build-up of correction slips has left the sheet stiff and gently undulating rather than flat, a characteristic of these working plans. There is age toning and light surface soiling, consistent with its long use as a working map. Please check the scan for any blemishes prior to making your purchase. Sheet 408 is printed on the reverse side. Each map is listed as a separate product, but the two maps share a single sheet, so whichever you buy, you receive both. If both maps are ordered together, we will send the sheet and refund the second purchase in full.

Condition Guide

We assess the condition of each item using three categories: Good, Fair, and Poor. We strive to ensure that any significant flaws are clearly shown in the images provided and detailed in the accompanying condition statement.

Good

The item presents well, with no significant flaws, and is in frameable condition. Minor imperfections—such as light spotting or offsetting, small blemishes, tight margins, neatly repaired tears, or discreet/professionally executed restoration—do not materially detract from its overall appearance.

Fair

The item shows noticeable flaws but remains in frameable condition. Some buyers may feel these imperfections affect its visual appeal. Typical issues may include more prominent spotting, blemishes, bleed-through from the reverse, obvious offsetting, visible or extensive restoration, wear along fold lines or junctures, small wormholes, trimmed or closely cropped edges, or less carefully executed repairs.

Poor

The item has major flaws that significantly impact its presentation and/or suitability for framing. These may include heavy spotting, staining, bleed-through, offsetting, unrepaired damage, or poorly executed repairs such as tears, holes, or areas of paper loss (including within the printed image). The item may also be fragile and prone to further deterioration.
