Charles Goad Insurance Plan of London, sheet 53 [Tower Hill, Trinity Square, Minories and Trinity House]

Goad's fire insurance plan of London, sheet 53, covers Tower Hill and Trinity Square (EC3), where Trinity House, Samuel Wyatt's building of 1796, remains the lighthouse authority's headquarters. It reopened in 1953 after being gutted in wartime. The Merchant Navy War Memorial names 36,000 seafarers. Tower Hill Underground Station moved to its present site in February 1967, and the Sir John Cass Nautical College joined the City of London Polytechnic in 1970. America Square, The Crescent and Circus Street were then remnants of George Dance the Younger's scheme of 1768–74 beside the Fenchurch Street railway approaches. The bombed Circus was later cleared for road widening, though two Crescent houses survive. The sheet also names Wakefield Gardens and Midland Bank. Goad's plans were made for fire-risk assessment and kept current with pasted overlays recording new tenants, altered layouts, demolition and rebuilding. The latest dated correction on this sheet is a vacancy note by America Square, dated November 1967. The sheet was resurveyed and reissued in September 1951, with a 1951 copyright date, and key plans acquired with the group were corrected as late as October 1970 and March 1971. Other streets on the sheet include Crutched Friars, Crosswall, Pepys Street, Savage Gardens, Cooper's Row, Minories and Hammett Street.

Insurance Plan of London, Volume III. Charles E. Goad, London.

Condition: Good |

Good; suitable for framing. A working sheet from one of the bound Goad volumes historically kept by fire-insurance offices, updated over decades with pasted correction slips. The build-up of correction slips has left the sheet stiff and gently undulating rather than flat, a characteristic of these working plans. There is age toning and light surface soiling, consistent with its long use as a working map. Please check the scan for any blemishes prior to making your purchase. Please contact us if you would like to arrange to view this map. Sheet 54 is printed on the reverse side. Each map is listed as a separate product, but the two maps share a single sheet, so whichever you buy, you receive both. If both maps are ordered together, we will send the sheet and refund the second purchase in full.

Condition Guide

We assess the condition of each item using three categories: Good, Fair, and Poor. We strive to ensure that any significant flaws are clearly shown in the images provided and detailed in the accompanying condition statement.

Good

The item presents well, with no significant flaws, and is in frameable condition. Minor imperfections—such as light spotting or offsetting, small blemishes, tight margins, neatly repaired tears, or discreet/professionally executed restoration—do not materially detract from its overall appearance.

Fair

The item shows noticeable flaws but remains in frameable condition. Some buyers may feel these imperfections affect its visual appeal. Typical issues may include more prominent spotting, blemishes, bleed-through from the reverse, obvious offsetting, visible or extensive restoration, wear along fold lines or junctures, small wormholes, trimmed or closely cropped edges, or less carefully executed repairs.

Poor

The item has major flaws that significantly impact its presentation and/or suitability for framing. These may include heavy spotting, staining, bleed-through, offsetting, unrepaired damage, or poorly executed repairs such as tears, holes, or areas of paper loss (including within the printed image). The item may also be fragile and prone to further deterioration.
