Charles Goad Insurance Plan of London, sheet 68 [St Mary Axe, Houndsditch, the Baltic Exchange and Bevis Marks Synagogue]
Goad's fire insurance plan of London, sheet 68, covers Bevis Marks and St Mary Axe (EC3), including the Baltic Mercantile and Shipping Exchange, whose hall of 1903 embodied the City's role in arranging international cargo movements. The IRA bomb of 10 April 1992 killed three people and wrecked the Exchange, and the ruin was razed in 1998. Its site, together with the neighbouring Chamber of Shipping, is now 30 St Mary Axe, Foster's Gherkin of 2004, where a landmark tower has taken the place of a specialised trading hall. Bevis Marks Synagogue of 1701, Britain's oldest in continuous use, still holds services, while St Andrew Undershaft of 1532 lost its seventeenth-century glass in the 1992 blast. Cunard House was rebuilt in the 1990s, and St Mary Axe House and West India House are also named. Plans like this were made for fire-risk assessment, and they carry pasted overlays recording new occupiers, altered layouts, demolition and rebuilding. The sheet was resurveyed and reissued in August 1943, with a 1949 copyright date, and its latest dated correction is August 1969. Key plans acquired with the group were still being corrected in October 1970 and March 1971. Other streets on the sheet include Houndsditch, Camomile Street, Bury Street, Creechurch Lane, Heneage Lane and Leadenhall Street.
