Charles Goad Insurance Plan of London, sheet D47 [King's Cross: York Way, Tileyard Road, Brewery Road and Vale Royal]
Goad's fire insurance plan of London, sheet D47, covers York Way and Tileyard Road (N7), a corner of Belle Isle that made goods nobody associates with it now. When the sheet was in use, H. & M. Rayne's shoe factory, which held royal warrants and was sold to Debenhams in 1975, stood alongside the C. A. Coutts cardboard-box factory, the Ebonite Container Company works and the Continental Ice Cream factory. Beside the Eastern Region railway, the Harrison Barber horse slaughterers and the J. L. Henson tripe dressers still upheld Belle Isle's reputation for noxious trades. On Tileyard Road, tile kilns had come before the Ebonite works, whose landmark water tower came down in 1983, and since 2011 the estate has been Tileyard, today a hub of recording studios and music businesses. Insurers weighed up fire risk from plans like this one, which were kept current with slips recording changed uses, altered layouts, demolition and new building; the latest dated correction on this sheet is October 1969. The sheet was resurveyed and reissued in June 1951, with a 1951 copyright date, and key plans for other London areas from the same group carry corrections as late as October 1970 and March 1971. Other streets on the sheet include Brewery Road, Brandon Road, Vale Royal and Blundell Street.
