[Neve in montagna: guide autosciatorie, I serie, no. 4:] Gressoney La Trinité
An exceptionally early Italian ski-area map of Gressoney-La-Trinité beneath Monte Rosa, recording a landscape of ski touring before the development of its modern lift network. Published around 1939, its Istituto Geografico Militare contour base is overprinted with red downhill routes, flagged starting points, blue-shaded ski grounds and the blue access road from Pont-Saint-Martin. Arrows indicate routes continuing towards Bettaforca, Lago Gabiet and Colle d’Olen, while labelled winter photographs around all four sides identify the surrounding skyline, including Castore and Lyskamm. No lift is plotted, although the standard legend includes slittovie—now-obsolete cable-hauled passenger sledges—and aerial cableways. The design therefore performs the two jobs of a modern piste map—practical route planning and intuitive recognition of mountain terrain—but keeps them as separate visual systems. Produced as Heinrich C. Berann’s pioneering oblique winter panoramas were emerging, it is a fascinating transitional or “proto-modern” piste map: a precursor in design to the familiar all-in-one panoramic form, though contemporary with its earliest examples. Gressoney’s Punta Jolanda chairlift followed in 1957, almost two decades later. Retained with its original illustrated motoring-guide folder, the sheet captures an earlier relationship between the village, its approach road and the surrounding snowfields.
