GULF OF MEXICO Caribbean West Indies Bahamas. Spanish Main. KITCHIN 1795 map
SKU: P-8-000196
'Map of the Gulf of Mexico, the islands and countries adjacent'
This fascinating map shows what was known at the time as the Spanish Main, ie the mainland of the American continent enclosing the Caribbean Sea and the Gulf of Mexico. The map indicates where "M. de la Sale settled in 1685", being the location of Fort Saint Louis, a French colony established in 1685 in present-day Texas near Arenosa Creek and Matagorda Bay by explorer Robert Cavelier de La Salle. He intended to found the colony at the mouth of the Mississippi River, but inaccurate maps and navigational errors caused his ships to anchor 400 miles (650 km) instead to the west, off the coast of Texas. The colony survived until 1688. Present-day Inez, Texas, USA later developed there. The map shows Jamaica, Cuba, Hispaniola, 'Porto Rico' (Puerto Rico), the Windward and Leeward Islands, the Virgin Islands and the 'Lucayo or Bahama Islands'. New Orleans is marked on the map.
