Hagstrom's Map of High Spots in New York [Map code 2533A]
This is the January 1940 edition of Hagstrom’s Map of High Spots in New York City, designed for tourists and sightseers. Known for his ability to simplify complex urban layouts, Hagstrom focuses here on New York’s principal streets, omitting smaller routes to enhance clarity and legibility. The map references 122 numbered buildings; key landmarks and neighborhoods are embellished with small pictorial illustrations—such as Harlem’s musicians, Greenwich Village’s artists, and a Bierkellner as nod to the German immigrant community near Lexington and 86th Street. Bridges and tunnels are also illustrated. The margins feature an extensive index listing places of relevance to tourists, including airports, amusement parks, supper clubs, and skyscrapers (the Empire State Building had been the tallest since 1931). At the bottom is a panorama of Manhattan's Downtown and Midtown. This is the earliest edition of this map that we have been able to identify.
