'Index to the Townland Survey of the County of Mayo'

The Ordnance Survey’s large, hand-coloured index to County Mayo is both a handsome county map and a guide to the detailed sheets on which individual townlands were surveyed. Its footline explicitly records engraving at the Ordnance Survey Office, Phoenix Park, in 1839 under Lieutenant Larcom, R.E., by Sergeant West of the Royal Sappers and Miners, with ornament by William Archibald and writing by J. Aikman. Published and sold for Her Majesty’s Government by Hodges & Smith of Dublin, it shows Mayo’s nine baronies, Achill, Clare Island, Clew Bay and Killala Bay. The index itself is at three miles to one inch (1:190,080); the numbered grid identifies 122 six-inch survey sheets, rather than indicating its own scale. Panels explain survey conventions, record parish acreages and advertise 38 half-sheets and the index at 2s 6d each, with the remaining 84 sheets at five shillings. Dissected into sixteen linen-mounted sections with red silk edging, it retains its practical folding format. The front bears an inscription apparently reading “15th Septr 49”, probably 15 September 1849. The 1839 date is that of the engraving; the imprint’s 104 Grafton Street address, which Hodges & Smith occupied from 1844–45, shows that this impression was printed about 1845–49.

Condition Guide

We assess the condition of each item using three categories: Good, Fair, and Poor. We strive to ensure that any significant flaws are clearly shown in the images provided and detailed in the accompanying condition statement.

Good

The item presents well, with no significant flaws, and is in frameable condition. Minor imperfections—such as light spotting or offsetting, small blemishes, tight margins, neatly repaired tears, or discreet/professionally executed restoration—do not materially detract from its overall appearance.

Fair

The item shows noticeable flaws but remains in frameable condition. Some buyers may feel these imperfections affect its visual appeal. Typical issues may include more prominent spotting, blemishes, bleed-through from the reverse, obvious offsetting, visible or extensive restoration, wear along fold lines or junctures, small wormholes, trimmed or closely cropped edges, or less carefully executed repairs.

Poor

The item has major flaws that significantly impact its presentation and/or suitability for framing. These may include heavy spotting, staining, bleed-through, offsetting, unrepaired damage, or poorly executed repairs such as tears, holes, or areas of paper loss (including within the printed image). The item may also be fragile and prone to further deterioration.
