İtalya Olayları [The events in Italy]

A highly detailed early-1944 anti-Axis satirical cartoon by Cemal Nadir Güler, Turkey’s most influential political caricaturist of the Second World War, commenting on the collapse of Fascist Italy and the disintegration of German power in the Mediterranean. Germany is represented by a Wehrmacht soldier under assault from the Italian Church and a second figure, likely intended to represent the Italian partisans. The Allied armies advancing through Italy are represented by a Tommy shaking his fists at the German soldier; he has the figures 5 and 8 tattooed on his muscular arms, representing the US 5th and British 8th Armies fighting their way up the peninsula in 1944. In the background, Fascists hang from gallows, reflecting the wave of summary executions by partisans. An Italian soldier struggles to remove the crown from the head of the King, alluding to the cotemporary debate over abolishing the monarchy and the discrediting of Victor Emmanuel III. The “heel” and “toe” of Italy are tied to the mainland with bundles of Allied money, alluding to AMGOT’s financial stabilisation of liberated southern Italy. On the horizon, German forces are shown being swept out of Albania. A superb and symbolically dense wartime image capturing the violent unravelling of Axis power in the Mediterranean.

Condition Guide

We assess the condition of each item using three categories: Good, Fair, and Poor. We strive to ensure that any significant flaws are clearly shown in the images provided and detailed in the accompanying condition statement.

Good

The item presents well, with no significant flaws, and is in frameable condition. Minor imperfections—such as light spotting or offsetting, small blemishes, tight margins, neatly repaired tears, or discreet/professionally executed restoration—do not materially detract from its overall appearance.

Fair

The item shows noticeable flaws but remains in frameable condition. Some buyers may feel these imperfections affect its visual appeal. Typical issues may include more prominent spotting, blemishes, bleed-through from the reverse, obvious offsetting, visible or extensive restoration, wear along fold lines or junctures, small wormholes, trimmed or closely cropped edges, or less carefully executed repairs.

Poor

The item has major flaws that significantly impact its presentation and/or suitability for framing. These may include heavy spotting, staining, bleed-through, offsetting, unrepaired damage, or poorly executed repairs such as tears, holes, or areas of paper loss (including within the printed image). The item may also be fragile and prone to further deterioration.
