'Malaya—Restricted—Singapore & Johore Bahru—HIND 1035, sheet 3L/12 (GSGS 4203)'

Marked “Restricted”, this detailed Allied military map captures Singapore under Japanese occupation, incorporating intelligence gathered from the air while the island remained in enemy hands. This example was reprinted without revision by the Survey Department, Federation of Malaya, in 1950, preserving the cartography and wartime information of the June 1945 fourth edition without alteration. The original edition appeared roughly two months before Japan's surrender announcement on 15 August and belongs to the preparations for the planned Allied recapture of Malaya and Singapore. Based on Federated Malay States surveys up to 1941, the map was updated from aerial photographs taken over the Japanese-occupied territory between November 1944 and February 1945. Intelligence information and road classification were supplied by the Inter-Service Topographical Department, South East Asia Command (ISTD, SEAC). Airfield details came from a provisional list dated March 1945, so this information was still subject to confirmation. The original fourth edition was published by the Survey Production Centre, Allied Land Forces South East Asia, revised by 7 Indian Air Survey Company and reproduced by 110 Map Production Company, Royal Engineers. At one inch to the mile, the map records the terrain in detail, with contours at twenty-five-foot intervals. The airfields, naval base and transport network place the island's military infrastructure within its wider landscape. Extensive rural areas and an older coastline predate Singapore's subsequent urban growth and reclamation.

Condition Guide

We assess the condition of each item using three categories: Good, Fair, and Poor. We strive to ensure that any significant flaws are clearly shown in the images provided and detailed in the accompanying condition statement.

Good

The item presents well, with no significant flaws, and is in frameable condition. Minor imperfections—such as light spotting or offsetting, small blemishes, tight margins, neatly repaired tears, or discreet/professionally executed restoration—do not materially detract from its overall appearance.

Fair

The item shows noticeable flaws but remains in frameable condition. Some buyers may feel these imperfections affect its visual appeal. Typical issues may include more prominent spotting, blemishes, bleed-through from the reverse, obvious offsetting, visible or extensive restoration, wear along fold lines or junctures, small wormholes, trimmed or closely cropped edges, or less carefully executed repairs.

Poor

The item has major flaws that significantly impact its presentation and/or suitability for framing. These may include heavy spotting, staining, bleed-through, offsetting, unrepaired damage, or poorly executed repairs such as tears, holes, or areas of paper loss (including within the printed image). The item may also be fragile and prone to further deterioration.
