'From Hyde Park Corner through Knightsbridge to Kensington'
A perspective map view from Hyde Park Corner through Knightsbridge to High Street Kensington, with Brompton Road and the Cromwell Road branching off to the left, illustrating one of London’s most fashionable and cultural districts. In the foreground stand Apsley House, the Duke of Wellington’s residence, and St George’s Hospital, with Hyde Park, the Serpentine, Rotten Row and the Ring extending northwards, together with the Cavalry Barracks and Albert Gate. Along Knightsbridge appear the Alexandra Hotel, Tattersall’s auction house, Lowndes Square and Sloane Street leading southwards into Belgravia. Further west are the South Kensington institutions including the South Kensington Museum (later the Victoria and Albert Museum), the Natural History Museum, the Imperial Institute, the Albert Hall and the Albert Memorial in Kensington Gardens. The route continues to High Street Kensington, with landmarks such as St Mary Abbots and High Street Kensington Station clearly marked, while beyond lie Earl’s Court, Addison Road Station, Olympia, and Holland Park with Holland House. The map combines perspective architecture with a clear street pattern, evoking the commercial, residential and cultural prominence of Knightsbridge and Kensington in the late Victorian period.
