'Panoramic Perspective of the Area Adjacent to Las Vegas - Hoover Dam and Lake Mead Recreation Area'
A striking panoramic map of the American Southwest, showcasing the region's natural and historical attractions around Hoover Dam (originally Boulder Dam) and Lake Mead. Created by Gerald Eddy for the Union Pacific Railroad, this 1956 edition highlights iconic National Parks such as Zion, Bryce Canyon, and the Grand Canyon, alongside key landmarks like Boulder City, Las Vegas, and Death Valley. The map details Union Pacific Railroad routes connecting destinations from Salt Lake City through Las Vegas and features the Atomic Energy Commission Testing Grounds (Nevada Proving Grounds), complete with a depiction of a mushroom cloud over Yucca Flats. Astonishingly to us today, at the time of publication, Las Vegas—just 65 miles southeast—branded itself as "The Atomic City," promoting itself as a destination for atomic tourism where visitors could watch atmospheric nuclear detonations while enjoying dawn parties. A nuclear bomb was detonated approximately once every three weeks during this era. The verso of the map includes promotional text and illustrations celebrating the region’s appeal to tourists, emphasizing Hoover Dam’s role as an engineering marvel and a driving force behind the Southwest’s development.
