'Lees Court, the Seat of the Rt Honble. The Lord Sondes'
Lees Court, Sheldwich, near Canterbury, Kent. The original house was built 1650–1652 to designs attributed to Inigo Jones for Sir George Sondes. In the late 18th century Sir John Soane added new stables, estate offices, and a dairy. The house was destroyed by fire in November 1910 and subsequently rebuilt between 1910 and 1912 by Montague Wheeler, closely replicating the form and proportions of the original structure. The formal gardens were designed in 1908 by Thomas Hayton Mawson. In the early 21st century the Countess Sondes founded Seeds the Countess Sondes, a company producing cosmetics derived from wheat-germ oil grown on the 4,500-acre Lees Estate.
