'From London Bridge, through the Borough, to Newington Butts and St. George’s Fields'
A perspective map view from London Bridge and the wharves along the river through the Borough to Newington Butts and St George’s Fields, tracing the historic thoroughfare of Borough High Street and Newington Causeway. At the lower edge, London Bridge spans the Thames with adjoining features including Tooley Street, London Bridge Station, St Saviour’s (Southwark Cathedral), Borough Market and the Bridge House Hotel. Moving south along Borough High Street appear Guy’s Hospital, St George’s Church, the Marshalsea Prison site and the Tabard Inn site, evoking the area’s medical, religious and literary associations. To the west lie Bermondsey, Maze Pond, the Charing Cross Railway and St Thomas Street, while to the east are Southwark Street & Union Street. In the distance are the Surrey Sessions House and Trinity Church, with Blackman Street converging into Newington Causeway. The view culminates with the Elephant and Castle, showing the Metropolitan Tabernacle, St George’s Road and Newington Butts. The engraving combines careful architectural detail with a clear street pattern, capturing Southwark’s transformation in the Victorian period into a bustling district of markets, hospitals, transport hubs and entertainment venues, while still recalling its medieval and literary heritage as the gateway to London from the south.
