[What to see and how to see it] London Underground Railways Map
A rare 1912 London Underground Railways pocket map, designed by the London Geographical Institute and printed by George Philip & Son Ltd. for the Underground Electric Railways of London. Issued for one year only, it formed the final version of the early UERL “green-border” maps (1908–12), the first unified Underground maps. Adapted from Philip’s larger Evening News Tube Map, this edition features the short-lived vertical “UndergrounD” wordmark, used only briefly in station signage and printed material before being abandoned. Stations are shown as white circles, with interchanges creatively colour-coded by using the border and centre to represent different lines—a system soon dropped as the network grew. The map is clearly aimed at visitors: dozens of tourist attractions, museums, theatres, parks, stadiums and exhibition grounds are highlighted in yellow, with further listings on the reverse. It shows the Underground Group lines, the Central London Railway, the Metropolitan Railway, and lighter blue for other railways, along with unusually detailed roads and parks; the Bank–Liverpool Street extension appears as a broken line under construction. A scarce and attractive survival from the transitional pre–Roundel era of Underground cartography.
