'A Map of the Island of Great Java'
An attractive English map of Java, engraved by Samuel John Neele for Samuel Hull Wilcocke’s translation of John Splinter Stavorinus’s Voyages to the East-Indies. Stavorinus, a Dutch rear-admiral in VOC service, wrote from direct experience of the Company’s Asian possessions; his account carried Dutch colonial knowledge into British print at a moment of sharpening imperial rivalry. The long folding format follows Java from the Sunda Strait to the eastern salient, naming Batavia, Bantam, Cheribon, Semarang, Surabaya, inland districts, rivers and mountain chains, with Madura, Bali and the adjacent tip of Sumatra included. More than a decorative island map, it is a practical colonial geography of the Dutch East Indies’ central possession, and a strong subject for collectors of Indonesia, Java and maritime empire.
