'Map showing the distribution of slaves in the Southern States'
First issued in 1861 and later published within Henry Stevens’s London edition of Edward A. Pollard’s Southern history The First Year of the War, Adolph von Steinwehr’s striking thematic map visualises slavery’s geography at the outbreak of the American Civil War. County-by-county colouring reveals the densest concentrations of enslaved people across the plantation South, especially from South Carolina through Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi and Louisiana. Tables compare Northern and Southern population and area, while insets show the British Isles at the same scale and the cotton, rice and sugar districts. Held by the Library of Congress, the map gave statistical force to the war’s central moral and economic question. Though issued within Pollard’s Southern narrative, Stevens noted that “he with Northern sympathies will perhaps find his opinions supported by it.”
