'Map of Sydney and Suburbs'
Published during the Second World War for the benefit of Allied servicemen, including Australians and Americans, this American Red Cross guide map by Clive Barrass offers a practical introduction to Sydney and its suburbs around 1944. From the harbour, it opens out to Palm Beach, Manly, Bondi, Botany Bay and Sutherland, with roads, railway lines, red mileage figures and green shading for water and parks helping visitors find their way. The reverse brings wartime Sydney to life through its service bureaux, clubs and hostels, alongside sightseeing notes, currency information and exchange rates. It lists the Red Cross South Pacific & South-West Pacific Area Headquarters in the Grace Building and the American Centre, as well as establishments serving the wider Allied community. These include Kinneil, converted into the Australian and Allied Officers' Club in 1943, and the Booker T. Washington Club at 207 Albion Street, established that year and reopened under American Red Cross management in December. Their inclusion places this undated guide no earlier than 1943, most plausibly in late 1943 or 1944. It captures a relatively brief chapter in the city's wartime life: the Red Cross handed the Booker T. Washington Club to the British Navy in July 1945, and the American Centre at 155 Elizabeth Street closed on 31 October. Together, these details suggest publication around 1944, within a probable late-1943 to mid-1945 window, while the map itself preserves Sydney before its later suburban expansion.
