Memoir for the Correction of Time [Pellizer's theory of the Solar System]
Joseph Emanuel Pellizer was a Spanish mathematician and astronomer who proposed an irrational astronomocal theory of the solar system, his "Memoir for the Correction of Time", in which he claimed that time and longitude could be more accurately calculated by his alternative theory of motion of the Earth and Moon relative to the sun in the solar system over a 19 year cycle. He argued that this method corrected errors caused by orbital eccentricities and irregular celestial rhythms, directly challenging the conventional astronomy of his time and rejecting the long-established heliocentric model. Lacking a sound scientific foundation, Pellizer's theory failed to gain acceptance. Nevertheless, his submissions are preserved in the archives of the Board of Longitude at the Royal Greenwich Observatory, where he persistently sought recognition—submitting his ideas both directly and through intermediaries over more than two decades. The Board, evidently exasperated, eventually issued a formal order forbidding him from making further contact. Pellizer's reputation suffered further when he became entangled in a legal dispute with the Spanish Consul Manuel de las Heras over financial matters, during which the Spanish ambassador in London publicly accused him of bringing dishonour upon his countrymen through his publications.
