L'Industrie Pétrolière au Moyen-Orient [The Middle East Oil Industry]
This map of Middle East oil industry, issued by the French petroleum company Total in 1971, provides a detailed overview of oil exploration and production concessions across the region. Covering territories from Iraq and Iran to Saudi Arabia, the Gulf States, and Oman, the map delineates oil fields, pipelines, refineries, and tanker loading points. Colour-coded areas indicate concession blocks held by various oil companies, with a detailed key listing corporate interests, dates of establishment, and concession areas. Major Western oil companies such as Standard Oil, Shell & BP are referenced. Insets show shipping and refining infrastructure across the Gulf and the eastern Mediterranean. The map is both a corporate promotional document and a strategic geopolitical overview during a period of intensifying international oil diplomacy. Produced during a critical period just prior to the 1973 oil crisis, this map illustrates Western corporate dominance of Middle Eastern oil resources at the time. It predates the Iranian Revolution. It reflects French interests in regional concessions and exemplifies the graphic clarity and geopolitical utility of corporate cartography in the late 20th century.
