[Dedication Plate] To the most Honourable Charles Watson-Wentworth, Marquis of Rockingham, Earl of Malton, Viscount Higham of Higham Ferrers, Baron Rockingham of Rockingham, Baron of Malton, Woodhouse and Harrowden, Lord Lieutenant and Custos Rotulorum of the West Riding of the County of York, and Custos Rotulorum of the North Riding of the said County, Knight of the most noble Order of the Garter, and one of His Majesty’s most Honourable Privy Council. This map is most humbly inscribed by his Lordship’s most obedient and obliged humble servant // A View of Middleham Castle
The south-west sheet from Thomas Jefferys’ twenty-sheet survey of the county of York. As it falls geographically outside the county boundary, it contains no topographical detail of Yorkshire itself, but instead bears a view of Middleham Castle together with a dedication to Charles Watson-Wentworth, 2nd Marquess of Rockingham. Rockingham had served as Prime Minister in 1765–66 and would briefly hold office again in 1782. He was one of the foremost Yorkshire magnates of his age, his seat being the vast Wentworth Woodhouse near Rotherham — still one of the largest private houses in England — which is depicted prominently on sheet 18. As Lord Lieutenant of the West Riding and Custos Rotulorum of both West and North Ridings, he was effectively the Crown’s chief representative in Yorkshire and the county’s pre-eminent nobleman, combining immense political influence with local authority. The production of a survey on this scale demanded several years of fieldwork (the map records surveys undertaken between 1767 and 1770) and involved heavy expense. Jefferys himself had been declared bankrupt in 1766, and while there is no direct evidence of a single patron underwriting the project, it is likely that Rockingham contributed support — whether by subscription or other means — to help bring the enterprise to completion.
