[New Map and Guide of New York—presented by the National City Bank of New York during its 140th anniversary—Head Office 55 Wall Street, New York 15, NY]
A plan of Lower Manhattan (with the Financial District on the verso), issued in 1952 to mark the 140th anniversary of the founding of the National City Bank of New York—the original name of what is now Citibank. The map includes a concise history of the “National City Organisation,” tracing its origins to 1812, two days before the outbreak of the War of 1812, and claiming lineage as “a direct off-spring” of First Bank of the United States. Founded in 1791, shortly after independence, the First Bank functioned as a quasi-central bank: it held federal deposits, issued widely trusted notes, extended credit, and helped stabilise the young republic’s finances. The text explains that when the First Bank’s 20-year charter was not renewed in 1811 and the institution was liquidated, its shareholders could exchange their stock on equitable terms for shares in the newly formed City Bank, which opened at 52 Wall Street, the former premises of the New York branch of the First Bank. The narrative frames this inheritance within the financial vision of Alexander Hamilton, the United States’ first Secretary of the Treasury and architect of its early financial system. The holding company adopted the name Citicorp in 1974, and the operating bank became Citibank in 1976.
