Chinese Intelligence [Naval Dispatch of the British acquisition of Hong Kong]
A contemporary report published in the Nautical Magazine (July 1841) under the heading “Chinese Intelligence”, incorporating official Opium War naval dispatches authored by Sir James John Gordon Bremer and addressed from H.M.S. Wellesley. The article includes Bremer’s first hand account of his taking possession of Hong Kong Island for the United Kingdom (pp. 474–475): “On 20th January, the preliminaries of a treaty of peace were agreed upon by Her Majesty's Plenipotentiary, under the seal of the Chinese Commissioner, one of the conditions of which was the cession of the Island of Hong-kong to Her Majesty, and the restoration of Chuenpee and Tycock-tow to the Chinese… On the same day [26th] I proceeded to Hong-kong, and took formal possession of the island in Her Majesty's name, and hoisted the colours on it, with the usual salutes and ceremonies.”
