'New Oxford Street and Holborn, to Smithfield and Cheapside'
A perspective map view of New Oxford Street, Holborn & Newgate Street to Smithfield, Cheapside and St. Paul's Cathedral, illustrating this busy east–west artery of central London. At the lower edge lies Tottenham Court Road with New Oxford Street leading past Bedford Square, Great Russell Street and the environs of the British Museum. St Giles High Street is also shown, where St Giles’s Church is prominently depicted, and onwards past Drury Lane, the Novelty Theatre and Lincoln’s Inn Fields with its institutions. Further east, Chancery Lane, Fetter Lane and Shoe Lane are marked, together with notable buildings such as Freemasons’ Hall and the Record Office. Holborn Viaduct crosses the Fleet valley, with nearby landmarks including St Andrew’s Holborn and the Old Bailey. To the north stand Hatton Garden, Leather Lane and the diamond district, while at the far end of the view are Smithfield Market, St Bartholomew’s Hospital and St Bartholomew the Great. The General Post Office is also shown, anchoring the commercial heart of the district. The map balances architectural detail with clarity of streets, highlighting Holborn’s role as a legal, commercial and institutional centre linking Oxford Street with the City of London.
