Novus Orbis Sive America Septentrionalis divisa per sua regna, provinc[ias] et insul: cura et opera. Matth. Seutt. S.C.M. Geogr. Aug. V. [New World or North America divided into its kingdoms, provinces, and islands]
Antique 18th-century copperplate map of North America by Matthäus Seutter. Original wash colour with a decorative allegorical title cartouche featuring indigenous figures symbolising the New World. The map extends from Greenland and Canada southward to Mexico and the Caribbean, delineating early colonial divisions, native toponyms, and exploratory routes. It features such characteristic elements of early 18th-century geography as Louisiana, insular California, and a developing outline of the Great Lakes, annotated with discoveries and conjectural islands. Areas of floating Sargassum are marked in the Atlantic, and several mislocated or phantom islands—Fonseca, Disgraciada, Mudleda, and Solitario—are also shown. Hudson Bay is named Buttons Bay, while Greenland and the Canadian Arctic Archipelago are exaggeratedly extended toward the North Pole. Executed on a distorted conic projection, this striking map captures both the reach and the imaginative limits of European knowledge of the New World in the early Enlightenment era.
