Omaha to the Amazon—WW2 Caribbean/Panama strategy—Richard Edes Harrison 1940 map

'Map 4: Omaha to the Amazon'
Seen from the central United States, Harrison’s oblique view turns the Gulf of Mexico, Caribbean, Central America and northern South America into an interlocking strategic frontage rather than a conventional north–south map. Great-circle and transport routes connect Omaha with Mexico, the Panama Canal, the West Indies, Venezuela and the Amazon basin. The accompanying commentary foregrounds canal defence, naval anchorages and air bases, military shipping, the incomplete Pan-American Highway and the region’s oil and mineral resources, while considering European and Axis influence. Published in September 1940, the spread is a vivid pre-Pearl Harbor statement of hemispheric defence and of the strategic importance of Latin America to the United States.
