One of the first geological maps of California, it was created by Thomas Antisell and published by the U.S. War Department as part of the Pacific Railroad Surveys (1853–1855). Serving as expedition geologist, Antisell accompanied Lieutenant John G. Parke to survey a potential southern railroad route between the Mississippi and the Pacific Coast. Conducted from 1854 to 1856, the survey documented geological formations along the route, enhancing scientific understanding of American geology. The map’s coloured sections highlight various rock types and formations, supporting the War Department’s goal of identifying viable transcontinental railroad routes.
