'Oxfordshire'
A richly decorative illustrated map of Oxfordshire, issued shortly after the Second World War to commemorate the county’s strategic, scientific, and agricultural contribution to the war effort. The map records patterns of wartime food production, notes Winston Churchill’s birthplace at Blenheim Palace, and highlights the role of RAF Broadwell in receiving and repatriating wounded servicemen, as well as surrounding areas used for training the U.S. 3rd Armored Division. Informative text panels describe the work of the Clarendon Laboratory, Oxford, in the development of radar, and the development and mass wartime use of penicillin at the Sir William Dunn School of Pathology, closely associated with Alexander Fleming and his Oxford collaborators. Inset views depict Blenheim Palace, the Radcliffe Camera, Broughton Castle, and Ditchley House, the latter noted for its wartime use by the Prime Minister. Heraldic devices, regimental insignia, and agricultural annotations enrich the design. An extract from Churchill’s address to both Houses of Congress on 26 December 1941 reinforces the map’s patriotic and transatlantic tone, making it both a decorative work and a vivid document of wartime Britain.
