[Neve in montagna: guide autosciatorie, I serie, no. 14:] Passo Rolle

An exceptionally early Italian ski-area map of Passo Rolle, depicting the Dolomite pass and its surrounding snowfields before lift networks came to dominate ski cartography. Published around 1939, its Istituto Geografico Militare contour base is overprinted with red downhill routes, flagged starting points and blue-shaded ski grounds. The blue access road winds through hairpin bends towards San Martino di Castrozza, with the opposite approach coming from Predazzo through Paneveggio. Labelled photographic panoramas around all four sides identify Castellazzo, Cimon della Pala, Vezzana and Colbricon, allowing skiers to recognise the mountains as both mapped terrain and a skyline. No lift is plotted, despite the standard legend including slittovie—now-obsolete cable-hauled passenger sledges—aerial cableways and installations under construction. The design therefore performs the two jobs of a modern piste map—practical route planning and intuitive reading of mountain terrain—but keeps them separate. Produced as Heinrich C. Berann’s pioneering oblique winter panoramas were emerging, it is a fascinating transitional or “proto-modern” piste map: a precursor in design to the familiar all-in-one panoramic form, though contemporary with its earliest examples. Retained with its original illustrated guide folder, this is a striking record of winter motoring and route-based skiing beneath the Pale di San Martino.

Condition Guide

We assess the condition of each item using three categories: Good, Fair, and Poor. We strive to ensure that any significant flaws are clearly shown in the images provided and detailed in the accompanying condition statement.

Good

The item presents well, with no significant flaws, and is in frameable condition. Minor imperfections—such as light spotting or offsetting, small blemishes, tight margins, neatly repaired tears, or discreet/professionally executed restoration—do not materially detract from its overall appearance.

Fair

The item shows noticeable flaws but remains in frameable condition. Some buyers may feel these imperfections affect its visual appeal. Typical issues may include more prominent spotting, blemishes, bleed-through from the reverse, obvious offsetting, visible or extensive restoration, wear along fold lines or junctures, small wormholes, trimmed or closely cropped edges, or less carefully executed repairs.

Poor

The item has major flaws that significantly impact its presentation and/or suitability for framing. These may include heavy spotting, staining, bleed-through, offsetting, unrepaired damage, or poorly executed repairs such as tears, holes, or areas of paper loss (including within the printed image). The item may also be fragile and prone to further deterioration.
