'Plan der Veld Slag van Oudenaerde den 11 July 1708 - Plan de la Bataille d'Oudenaerde du 11 Juillet 1708'
This superb map, from Henri Fricx’s Table des cartes des Pays Bas et des Frontières de France, vividly illustrates the Battle of Oudenaarde, fought on 11 July 1708 during the War of the Spanish Succession. The map captures the preliminary and final troop movements, battlefield dispositions, and key engagements, with an explanatory key housed in an ornate cartouche featuring weaponry, standards, and flags. The Allied forces, commanded by John Churchill, Duke of Marlborough and Prince Eugène of Savoy, achieved a decisive victory over the French army, led by Louis, Duke of Burgundy and Louis Joseph, Duke of Vendôme. The map details the French march from Gavere toward the battlefields west of Singen, across the Plains of Heurne and Huyse, with troop movements between Oycke, Wannegem, and Aweghem. It also marks the Allied camp near Moereghem after the battle and the French retreat through Cruyshauten. This crucial battle turned the tide of the war, weakening the French position in Flanders and thwarting their attempts to regain control of the region.
