[Plan London Now—for Him! — Exhibition of] The County of London Plan

Issued by the London County Council for its July 1943 exhibition at County Hall, Westminster Bridge, this illustrated folding leaflet brought Forshaw and Abercrombie’s County of London Plan to a wider public during the war. Parks, communities and redesigned roads present a vision of reconstruction centred on the quality of everyday life. Four diagrams contrast existing open spaces with a proposed connected park system, explain land use and residential communities, and set out the proposed road network. The small road diagram at lower right offers an early public view of the ring-and-radial system that helped lay the groundwork for the later, fiercely contested London Ringways; those later inner orbital motorways remained largely unbuilt after their cancellation in 1973. At lower left, a small diagram of social communities, land uses and open spaces echoes the rounded forms of the celebrated ‘potato map’, while being a different diagram from the full-size Social and Functional Analysis plate in the published plan. The accompanying explanation places main roads between communities, protecting their independence and allowing children to walk to school safely. Photographs contrast a cramped courtyard with the openness of cottage housing. With its appeal to plan London for the next generation, the leaflet is an engaging record of reconstruction ambitions as they were first being explained and debated.

Condition Guide

We assess the condition of each item using three categories: Good, Fair, and Poor. We strive to ensure that any significant flaws are clearly shown in the images provided and detailed in the accompanying condition statement.

Good

The item presents well, with no significant flaws, and is in frameable condition. Minor imperfections—such as light spotting or offsetting, small blemishes, tight margins, neatly repaired tears, or discreet/professionally executed restoration—do not materially detract from its overall appearance.

Fair

The item shows noticeable flaws but remains in frameable condition. Some buyers may feel these imperfections affect its visual appeal. Typical issues may include more prominent spotting, blemishes, bleed-through from the reverse, obvious offsetting, visible or extensive restoration, wear along fold lines or junctures, small wormholes, trimmed or closely cropped edges, or less carefully executed repairs.

Poor

The item has major flaws that significantly impact its presentation and/or suitability for framing. These may include heavy spotting, staining, bleed-through, offsetting, unrepaired damage, or poorly executed repairs such as tears, holes, or areas of paper loss (including within the printed image). The item may also be fragile and prone to further deterioration.
