'Plan of the Docks and Warehouses proposed to be made at Birkenhead in the County of Chester'
James Meadows Rendel (1799–1856) was a leading British civil engineer whose 1844 plans for the Birkenhead docks proposed a modern, efficient rival to Liverpool’s increasingly congested port, with deep-water access and integrated rail connections. His ambitious scheme was only partially realised—initial elements like the Great Float were completed by 1847—however, financial and logistical challenges, along with competition from Liverpool, prevented full execution. Control later passed to the Mersey Docks and Harbour Board, merging Birkenhead's development with Liverpool’s. Rendel’s design remains a key early example of Victorian dock engineering.
