Projected Buenos Aires to Chile Railway Route. Robert Crawford. RGS 1873 map

'Map Showing the Projected Railway Route from Buenos Ayres to Chile to accompany the Paper by R. Crawford Esq.'
Original lithographed map prepared to accompany a paper by Robert Crawford, issued under the auspices of the Royal Geographical Society. In spite of the title, the map illustrates proposed railway alignments from Rosario and Buenos Aires westward as far as Mendoza, stopping short of the Andean crossing itself. It reflects mid-Victorian British interest in South American railway development and trans-continental trade routes. A through railway between Argentina and Chile was eventually completed with the opening of the Transandine Railway in 1910, nearly four decades later, underscoring the map’s importance as a document of aspirational 19th-century infrastructure planning; the railway closed in 1984 and is now defunct.
