'R.A.F. Gridded Map No. 1. New Providence Island, Bahamas, B.W.I.'
Rare large-format Second World War R.A.F. gridded map of New Providence Island, Bahamas, centred on Nassau and Oakes Field, May 1943. Compiled from aerial photographs of the Bahamas Survey flown by U.S. Navy Photographic Squadron Two, Miami Detachment, with cartography by Lt. Comdr. G. J. DeGarmo and Lt. (j.g.) W. J. Gregg, and roads checked by F/Lt J. W. Petrie of the R.A.F. Regiment. The map records wartime roads, settlements, coastlines, ponds, airfield and harbour infrastructure across the island in a utilitarian blue-line military-survey format. Produced when Nassau was an important Allied air-training and reconnaissance base, it is a highly unusual operational map, probably issued in very small numbers for service use rather than public circulation; its folds and toning reinforce that wartime working provenance.
